"...An important detail, often overlooked by modern readers, is the location of Jesus’ baptism: in the wilderness. The wilderness was dangerous and without order. For a first-century reader, this would have been obvious and communicated that Jesus went to a place of utter chaos and lawlessness. As God brought order through Creation, in Jesus Christ He also restored order, which was destroyed by sin. We receive restoration by virtue of our baptism and are made His children. Water, the Spirit, and the Word of God are all present in creation AND in the Jesus’ baptism, the first sacrament of God’s New Creation...."
