Bible Text: Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 116:1-8, James 3:1-12, Mark 8:27-38 | The Rev. Cynthia P. Brust
Bearing our cross is a choice of faithful discipleship. It is a voluntary form of sacrificial obedience that identifies us completely with Christ. Bearing our cross is not making the best of a situation or circumstance. It is something we deliberately take up and bear. It means laying down one’s life – offering it as a living sacrifice. The Cross we are to bear invites rejection because it confronts the ideologies and idolatries of the world. Knowledge about Jesus' identity is useless if it remains abstract. Christ calls followers to a journey that leads in a particular direction toward a specific destination – crucifixion and resurrection – new life.
